"El Carmelo", is a Residence established and directed by the Carmelite Sisters Teresas of San Joseph. (Catholic Order with headquarters in Spain). The purpose of the Residence is to host young women  (18 to 35 years of age), who come to the United States to continue with their education, or to work; offering them a secure and inexpensive place to live while in New York City; in an environment of friendship and mutual respect. 

The Residence is centrally located at: 249 West 14th Street, (between 7th and 8th avenues), Manhattan, NY 10011. It is within a very short distance from the "Fashion Institute of Technology", "New York University, "The School of Visual Arts", "Parson School of Design", "Joffrey Ballet School" and Greenwich Village.  It's less than one block to 7th avenue subway train station (For the:  B, D, F & Q trains), and just a few steps away from the 8th avenue train station (E, L, 1,2,3,9 Trains).


It has easy access to taxis, buses and trains that connect with all the MTA transportation system in the city of New York, to other inter-state and sub-urban transportation systems, that will take you to neighboring states, such as: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, the city of Philadelphia, the state of Maryland, the Capital City of the U.S., Washington DC; etc.


The Carmelite Residence is next to a Catholic Church, and there are other Catholic, and diverse denominations Churches, nearby, within walking distance. Hospitals, schools, museums, brand name stores, supermarkets, outlet-stores, restaurants for all the inclinations and budgets, etc., etc., are all very close to the Residence too. Central Park. And the famous Broadway Theatres are just a few train stops from the residence. You can even walk to them as well as to the Times Square area if you so whish. We are very close to New York's main tourist's attractions and there are plenty activities at hand to enjoy while in New York.




All of our accommodations are based on double occupancy. Every single one of our available rooms is to be shared by two roommate girls. If you don't have a roommate at the time of making a reservation, keep in mind that you will be sharing your room with another girl. We keep our Residence clean and offer a comfortable environment to all in-house residents. Each one of our residents is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the assigned room, and all residents in general, are responsible for helping us keep of all the common areas clean (Areas such as: The TV and all recreation rooms, the studio, the Chapel and laundry room etc.), while in our residence.

Residents are not permitted to move furniture from or to any of the rooms.  


The building has central air conditioning and heating. It also has a get-together room in the basement for recreation, where we have a microwave oven, a refrigerator, soda machine, a TV watching area; and a small but very convenient laundry room. 


MEAL SERVICE AND FOOD:  Breakfast is included Monday thru Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.  - Supper/Dinner is also served Monday thru Friday from 6:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m. - We have NO Meal Service on Saturdays, Sundays, Holidays. We don't offer any Meal services during the month of June. 

OPERATION HOURS: The Residence is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., from Sunday thru Thursday. - Fridays and, Saturdays and during the holidays, we are open for the residents till 12 midnight.  - Residents are allowed to have outside visitors in the assigned visitor's areas, till no later than 9:00 p.m. 

The Residence remains open all the year, with exception of a period of 15 days during the summer. The Residents should leave the residence during this time, since this is the time we use for building maintenance, repairs, renovations, etc. 

The closing of the Residence for 15 days during the summer time, marks the expiration of current-stay-period for all the Residents and a new period starts upon the re-opening of the Residence, passed the 15 day closing in summer.

RATES / TARIFFS:  The rate for lodging, including breakfast and dinner (As previously stated), is: 

DAY BY DAY - STAY: From 1 day to 20 days, the rate is: $60:00 per person / per day.  Plus a $50:00 registration fee per room - non refundable - Full payment is required in advance. 

PARTIAL STAY:  From 3 weeks to 12 weeks, the rate is: $185.00 per week / per person. There is a $50:00 non-refundable registration fee per person, and a $250:00 per person, refundable security deposit. Two weeks must also be paid in advance at the moment of reservation or registration. 

FULL TERM STAY:  More than 13 weeks. The rate per week, per person is: $ 155:00.  There is a $50:00 non-refundable registration fee per person, and a $250:00 per person, refundable security deposit. Two weeks must also be paid in advance at the moment of reservation or registration. 


You need to give us at least two weeks in advance notice in writing.  Please note that if you leave in the middle of the week, you will be charged that full week's rate.

You are responsible if you cause some damage to the property, in our Residence and the cost for the repair or replacement will be deducted from your security deposit. If the security deposit is not enough to cover the cost of the damage, you will need to provide the funds to pay for it.

If you decide to leave your belongings in the Residence during the time the it is closed in June (Summer time); you will be charged the equivalent to two weeks (At the full term rate). After the 15 days of closing are over and the Residence re-opens, your normal applicable rate  will resume.    

If you want to use a personal TV, a laptop computer, and/or our wireless Internet connection, within the residence, you will have a weekly charge of $5.00 dollars, per item used.

Every Resident contract, as mentioned before, expires at the time the Residence closes in summer. A new contract needs to be signed by every Resident, when the Residence re-opens in June, every year.

You should provide your own bed linen, bedspreads, sheets, towels and sanitary articles. You are responsible for the washing and housekeeping of such items.

For those Residents paying the Day-by-day rate, The Residence will provide the bed linen, bedspreads, sheets and towels.

The security deposit can not be used to pay for the weekly or daily rate and will only be refunded if notice of intention to vacate is given at least two weeks in advance. 


Smoking is not permitted. We do not allow the use of any electronics that need to be plug to the electric outlets. Kitchen and cooking equipment, as well as any heating or cooling devices, are also forbidden, unless permission is previously requested and approved in writing. 

In order to protect the comfort and well-being of others and all Residents, silence must be kept from 11:00 p.m. on. If using personal Radio, TV set, etc., between 10:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m.; please make sure to lower the volume, in order to not disturb others.

Residents are not permitted to remain out of the Residence and out of their rooms, after 11:00 p.m. If you need to sleep out of the Residence any given night, you must notify us in advance and must fill an absentee form. 

Periodically, the Administration Staff of the Residence may notify you of an information meeting regarding policies, procedures, etc. You are must be present at such meetings, unless previously excused in writing.


You must fill an Admission Application Form and must provide a full color picture of yourself, along with two letters of recommendation and the full name, addresses and telephone numbers of at least two members of your family, such as your parents, custodians, closed friends, or relatives; to be used as emergency contacts, if needed. A copy of your passport and a copy of any other official Identification document, are also required at the time of registration. Applicable rate charges, fees and security deposits, must be pre-paid at the time of reservation or registration. All consecutive payments are due and payable in advance, on Fridays and Saturdays.
